It’s lovely and fascinating to combine the souls of the elderly with the beauty of nature. Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth, two photographers from Finland and Norway, collaborated on the “Eyes as Big as Plates” project. This is a parody of figures and characters from Norwegian mythology, according to Ikonen. It has also grown into a series of images exhibiting “mental landscapes”.
It was a folklore-based project, thus they chose old individuals to be their subjects. Various natural settings are chosen for the seniors, and they are adorned in organic materials that complement their surroundings. The clothing blends nicely with the surroundings, so they’re drawing attention to themselves. ‘ The photographs taken by these photographers have a more earthy appearance as a result of this. Another intriguing thing about this is that they’ve taken senior folks over the amount of younger people, so the amazing work has an aging beauty to it as well. Eyes as Big as Plates is launching a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise money for a book that will showcase elderly individuals.
