In September 838 new emojis will be released, including a pregnant man emoji, a melting face emoji, interracial handshakes, and beans.
The Unicode Consortium, which oversees the emoji keyboard, has finalized a new set of symbols to let people communicate themselves when words are just not enough.
The inclusion of a ‘pregnant person’ and ‘pregnant man’ emoji stirred debate when it was first revealed in July, but Emojipedia has stated that Unicode aims to be as accessible as possible given the worldwide use of emojis and the fact that each emoji has a gender-neutral variation. The emoji may also be used to represent a ‘food baby,’ according to the report.
Jane Soloman, a Senior Emoji Lexicographer, stated, “These emojis have been authorized to make the emoji keyboard more uniform and gender-inclusive, in accordance with the same stages we saw with other emojis in previous years.”
She went on to say: “Men may be pregnant, regardless of naming traditions.
“This relates to both the actual world (e.g. trans males) and fictional realms (e.g. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Junior and Lil Nas X’s album ‘Montero’ promotional materials.) Pregnancy may happen to people of any gender. Emojis have been created to symbolize this.”
On Twitter, the introduction of the new emoji has elicited a mixed response. While several have expressed their bewilderment, others have asked its use. “I can barely count on one hand how many people requested a pregnant man emoji,” TokyoDrifter remarked. “I’m not hating on trans folks or anything; I’m simply curious as to [who] is going to use that?”
Some criticized the unfavorable responses, claiming that it didn’t matter. Evelyn Seeker, a Twitter user, commented, “The conversation about the pregnant man emoji is amusing.” “A bunch of grown-up toddlers sobbing about something that doesn’t touch them and certainly will not.”
Becky Self, another user, praised it as “a public acknowledgment that pregnancy isn’t simply a woman’s problem.”
Others claimed they were looking forward to using the pregnant man emoji when they’d overindulged. “Finally, I will use the pregnant man emoji when I’m very full and swollen,” Jack R remarked.
