Green Seaweed Fossil About Billion Years Old Is An Ancestor Of Earth’s First Plants.

Paleontologists believe that small freckles discovered on a rock may hold the key to understanding the origins of plant life on the planet. The freckles are billion-year-old seaweed microfossils, according to Virginia Tech experts. According to a research released they push back the multicellular green plant’s existing record by roughly 200 million years. The oldest known fossilized green seaweed previously dated back 800 million years.

The fossils are so little that they can only be seen using a microscope. They are around 2 millimeters long, or about the size of a flea. Despite their small size, experts believe that micro plants had a role in the development of terrestrial plants that arose about 550 million years later.

Post-doctoral researcher Qing Tang discovered the green seaweed, which is a kind of algae called Proterocladus antiquus. Tang discovered the fossils in a rock in Dailan, China, using maps that show researchers where millions to billions of years-old rocks may be located throughout the world.

The rocks were discovered and sent to Virginia Tech’s paleontological lab, where they were examined under a microscope. Tang was surprised to learn that what he thought were merely “small brownish-grey spots on mudstone rocks” turned out to be the world’s earliest multicellular green seaweed.

Tang told CNN, “I was really delighted when I uncovered the first example of the seaweed Fossil fossil.” “I quickly presented it to my supervisor, Virginia Tech’s Professor Shuhai Xiao, and we both concluded that this is a very serious issue.”

A treasure to be cherished.

According to CNN, the discovery merited a celebration, according to Shuhai Xiao, a paleobiologist and one of the study’s leaders.

“This is a major breakthrough,” Xiao remarked. “This type of algae produces oxygen, which is a vital component of the atmosphere that allows humans and animals to exist. They are also necessary plants for maintaining our planet’s habitability.”

According to Tang, the seaweeds were green while they were alive, but they lost their color after being buried so deep and at such high temperatures for over 1 billion years. When seaweeds perished, their organic remnants were “boiled” beneath silt and imprinted on rock discovered on dry ground that was once the ocean.

“These new fossils show that green seaweeds were major actors in the water long before their land plant ancestors relocated and seized control of dry land,” said Xiao in a statement. “Plants and algae provide food and oxygen to the whole biosphere, yet land plants did not develop until around 450 million years ago.”

These progenitors of the first land plants and trees, which appeared 450 million years ago, are linked to these fossils.
Xiao claims that land plants such as trees, grass, and shrubs developed from green seaweeds, an aquatic plant, despite the fact that the subject is hotly contested among experts.
