When the struggle for his existence came to an end, Nolan, the 4-year old boy emphasized his faith rather than thinking about death. When he learned that he would die soon, he told his mother, Ruth, that he was waiting for her in heaven. Little Nolan Scully was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma – the rate of soft tissue cancer – when he was three years old. Once he was identified, Nolan’s family started a Facebook page that tracked the pros and cons of his journey. And also, Little Nolan wanted to become a police officer and serve his community like his father Jonathan, a firefighter. Jonathan resigned as soon as his son was diagnosed. While in hospital, the city police commissioner made his dream come true by being sworn in as an honorary police officer. On this extraordinary day, he became Sergeant Rollin Nolan.
In this situation, words cannot express how difficult it must have been for the family to process this news. Nolan’s mother was now gathering her strength to tell her son what was happening. Surprisingly, though, his response showed that his faith was truly pure and strong. Nolan was not afraid of death. He even told her he was staying in heaven.
Nolan’s mother shares a conversation she had with her son in the last days before he died:
Mom: Poot, it hurts to breathe, right?
Nolan: Weeeelll. Yeah.
Mom: You’re in a lot of pain, aren’t you, baby?
Nolan: (looking down) Yes.
Mom: Poot, this Cancer stuff sucks. You no longer need to fight.
Nolan: (pure pleasure) I do not ?? !! But I will do it for you, mom !!
Mom:: No, Poot!! Was that what you were doing? Are you fighting for mom?
Mom: Nolan Ray, what’s Mom’s job?
Nolan: To keep me safe!
Mom: Honey, I can not do that here anymore. Heaven is the only way I can protect you. (My heart breaks)
Nolan: Sooooo, I’ll go to heaven and play until you get there! You’re coming, aren’t you?
Mom: Absolutely! You can’t get rid of mom so easily!
Nolan: Thank you, mom! I’ll play with Hunter and Braille and Henry !!”
The 4-year-old and his family made the most of the little time he spent enjoying each other’s company. Nolan wanted to keep his mother close to him. On the last day of his life, Ruth was allowed to bathe. Shortly after she closed the bathroom door, her son closed his eyes and went to deep sleep, and the end of life began. As she came out of the shower, little Nolan surrounded his entire medical team. While Ruth was taking a bath, her son fell into a coma, and his lungs collapsed.
“I ran and lay down with him and put my face to his right. Then a miracle happened that I will never forget. My angel breathed, opened his eyes, and smiled at me, ‘I love you, Mom,’ and turned his head towards me at 11:54 p.m. Rollin Nolan Scully passed away while I was singing ‘You are My Sunshine in his ear.”
When Nolan’s mother shared her memories of him with the internet, she included a bathroom floor photo. Little Nolan preferred to put it on the bathtub outside the bathroom.
